Cradel of local history and culture
The Pielinen Museum is Finland’s second-largest open-air museum. The open-air museum area, open during the summer, offers a diverse presentation of the architectural heritage of the Pielinen region and the older forest work culture. The open-air museum area features over 70 buildings and structures that have been relocated to the museum from the Pielinen Karelia region. On display are, among other things, old farmsteads, the extensive Savotaranta forestry section with its buildings, and many other interesting structures.

Olavi Martikainen – The Last Bohemian
In the summer of 2026, the Pielinen Museum’s main building will host the art exhibition Olavi Martikainen – The Last Bohemian. The exhibition brings together an impressive selection of works by this expressionist artist, who is remembered as a unique personality. The paintings of Olavi Martikainen (1920–1979), a native of Lieksa, convey a love of nature, particularly mountain views.
