Monola Granary

Jean Sibelius’s scenic honeymoon destination.
Famous composer Jean Sibelius and his wife Aino stopped on their honeymoon in 1892 at Monola, on the shores of Lake Pielinen, where the log granary they stayed in is open to the public during the summer. The granary had been used to provide temporary lodging for travelers even before the Sibelius’ honeymoon. Now restored, it continues to serve travelers by offering a glimpse into life from a century ago.

Echos of Monola
Sibelius’s time at the granary was productive. After composing several songs in Monola, the magnificent views of Lake Pielinen opening up from the granary also inspired several symphonies, which are celebrated in the area during events such as the summer Monola Festival Weeks.
